So in the beginning of September we went down to Stockholm, not only to enjoy awesome city food, but also to pick up my parents for this year’s moose hunt. Unfortunately due to the hurricane in the U.S., their flight was delayed by 5 days! So what were we to do? We decide to take a ride to Linköping, a town about 2 hours from Stockholm, to visit a friend.

Gata Canal

The evening consisted of grilling and catching up. The next day we received a tour of Linköping, and it was a grand one! First stop, the Gota Canal!

The canal was beautiful, and since it was a week day after vacation time, it was pretty empty! It was quite cool to see how the boats get through the canal through the locks, and according to our friend, it is really popular in the summers. A lot of Swedes like to take their 4 week vacation on the boats sailing around the country.

Gota Canal Lock

The canal also has a lot of history, with the first lock being completed in 1818. The place looked quite modern and peaceful, with fish jumping and ducks waddling around. Unfortunately because summer was over, everything was closed so we went on to our next stop, Vreta klosters church.

Vreta klosters church

This church was once an old monastery and the remains can still be seen. It was also quite beautiful, just the garden itself seemed to hold something peaceful about it.

Church garden

The old ruins were part of the garden itself. The walls have long ago become a part of the scene and it was quite cool to stand there and try to imagine how the monastery looked all those years ago.

Monastery wallsI have to say, while the Göta Canal was very nice, this monastery was my favorite spot in Linköping Sweden. However our tour was not done. The next stop was lunch down town!

Linkoping down town

While some of the building in Linköping were beautiful, mostly it was typical shops and malls. However I was impressed with how many there were, and they even had not one, but TWO cheese shops! Our friends thought it was a little weird that I had to go in just to stare at the cheese, but in Skellefteå we do not get cheese shops!

All in all it was a great day seeing what Linköping has to offer. If you have time it is a definite must see in your Swedish travel list!
