This last Sunday was Mother’s Day in not only the United States, but also Australia and Canada. However, this was not the case in Sweden.

Czech Republic seems to enjoy celebrating International Woman’s Day instead of Mother’s Day, so I thought maybe this was also the case in Sweden. Nope! Mother’s Dayis celebrated in Sweden. Just not on the same day as in most English speaking countries. Mother’s Day is always celebrated on the last Sunday in May in Sweden, making it May 29th this year.

Flowers

Why so late? Well, you have to remember that half of Sweden is covered in snow. We are just starting to see green up here in Norrland, so rumor has it that the late date was picked so that all of Sweden can pick flowers for their mother’s.

So Happy (a day late) Mother’s Day to all those mothers in the United States, Australia, and Canada! Swedish mothers, well, you are just going to have to wait!
