One of the great things I love about my Swedish course is that we get to experience some Swedish culture. Lately we have been reading material and watching films about Lena-Maria Klingvall.

Lena-Maria is internationally known singer, and goes around the country singing, mostly at churches. What makes her famous, however, isn’t necessarily her voice (though it is pretty), but the fact that she was born with no arms and one leg half the length of the other.

She seems like a very swell lady, and the documentary about her life on SVT (which hopefully you outside of Sweden can view for free) is very interesting. She has written books about her life (the first called “Footnotes“, and has been translated into English and other languages.

I’m not entirely sure why she is famous. I don’t think she is the only person in Sweden born with this type of handicap. And she is very religious, which I haven’t really come across in Sweden much. She is pretty inspirational though. Not only does she sing, but she swims, drives, and lives on her own, even with her handicap.

In any case, I think the documentary is very interesting, and always a great way to practice Swedish. Enjoy, and I hope Lena-Maria Klingvall inspires you as much as she did me!

Edit: Looks like the video was removed! 🙁
