Swedes Recycle Under Full Terrorist Threat

Again, another reason why I love Sweden. Nothing stops Swedes from recycling. Absolutely nothing. Not even a terrorist attack.

Someone pointed this thread out to me on Reddit with a video of Swedes recycling under the terrorist threat they recently had. A rough translation of the text (please Swedes, if I’m wrong, correct me):

When someone looks up the word “Swedish-head” in the dictionary there is these two that are sorting recycling trash while there is a full terrorist threat.

The thread continues to be hilarious, I will share some of the funniest ones with a few translations for those of you who don’t speak Swedish. Like with this one:

om man slutar kallsoterera sa vinner terroristerna

Rough translation? If one stops trash sorting so win the terrorists.

Or here is another one that doesn’t need any translation that I love.

Environment needs to Fika

And lastly, someone who is freaking out about people writing Swedish and English in the same sentence that cracks me up.

Sick in huvet

For those who don’t know Swedish “helt sjukt i huvudet” is “completely sick in the head”.

Oh Sweden, how I love you so. You are the best place to be green, that is for sure. I can’t wait to see you soon!

Swede Hatches Egg From Grocery Store

Even though this happened in January (and I’m just posting it now), but now every time I cook eggs I think of this story! Supposedly this Swedish women, Agneta, heard somewhere that some grocery eggs are fertile and can be hatched if warmed. She gave it a shot with a 6 pack of eggs from Coop … Read more

Ice Hotel Sweden

Ice Hotel Now Year Round

The famous ice hotel I’ve heard about ever since I’ve heard about Sweden, it seems like.  The ICE Hotel is built ever year (since it was made out of ice) in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi.  It features not only rooms guests can sleep in (yes, made out of ice), but also has a famous ‘ice bar’ where you can drink your liquor out of an ice glass.

Since November, though, you can now experience the ICE Hotel year round with a new ICEHOTEL 360. This will have saunas and bathrooms, a large ice bar and an ice gallery that will be cooled in the summers using solar panels.

Check out the awesome video above (which totally makes me miss Sweden!) or visit their website to learn more about the ICE Hotel.

St Lucia for Dummies

Lucia for Dummies

One thing I absolutely love about the Swedish government is how informative they are about Sweden! In researching a bit about St Lucia, I found a video that gives you the breakdown you need for Lucia in Sweden.

AKA, Lucia for Dummies!  I’m glad I watched it too, because I was forgetting something important.  What is needed for Lucia?

  1. Saffron buns (or lussebullar)
  2. Singing children on December 13th
  3. Glögg!

I can’t believe I still don’t have a recipe for glögg! That is my mission this year.  Find a good glögg recipe and don’t burn it!  Do you have one you want me to try? Send it my way!

I will be doing more digging into Lucia, particularly I want to find some Lucia songs that we can all sing along to.  In the meantime though, enjoy this video about Lucia in Sweden (for Dummies).

Sweden Runs Out of Garbage

This is old news, but it is one of my favorite facts about Sweden and it is something that can be shared over and over again.

Yes, at the end of 2014, Sweden ran out of garbage and started importing it from other countries such as Norway and the UK.

Say what?!?

Yes, the Swedish recycling program is doing so well that only 1% of Sweden’s waste goes into landfills. The rest, is either burned or it is turned into biofuel. I wrote an article on this when I lived in Sweden on how impressed I was with Swedish recycling and how Sweden was turning me green.

Swedish-Waste-1998-2007The Swedish Waste Management has a great PDF in English that talks about what Sweden is up to when it comes to turning waste into energy.  So far, I believe they are the world’s greatest example and hopefully something other countries can start to replicate.

You can see that they have slowly been recycling more and producing less waste.  The waste they recycle is turned into energy for heating homes and electricity.  And they are so darn good at it, that they need more trash to recycle to meet their quota. They now import 700,000 tons of waste from other countries to recycle.

Watch the video above and see how importing garbage is great business for Sweden!
