Ice Hotel Sweden

Ice Hotel Now Year Round

The famous ice hotel I’ve heard about ever since I’ve heard about Sweden, it seems like.  The ICE Hotel is built ever year (since it was made out of ice) in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi.  It features not only rooms guests can sleep in (yes, made out of ice), but also has a famous ‘ice bar’ where you can drink your liquor out of an ice glass.

Since November, though, you can now experience the ICE Hotel year round with a new ICEHOTEL 360. This will have saunas and bathrooms, a large ice bar and an ice gallery that will be cooled in the summers using solar panels.

Check out the awesome video above (which totally makes me miss Sweden!) or visit their website to learn more about the ICE Hotel.

Giant Fish from Norrland

Norrland! Gotta love it. This video went viral on Tuesday when two teens caught a giant pike fish while fishing in Norrland. This fish weighed in at over 30lbs and 4 feet long.

While it is a huge fish, pike is not usually eaten in Sweden (though it is a delicacy in France). Still, a fun catch!

Warning, they do scream. This is a perfect time to practice listening to Swedish (or at least Norrlandska). Here are some words they repeat.

Filma på fisken! – Film the fish!

Jävla – Damn

Han inte slut. – he isn’t done.

SE DU, VILKEN MONSTER! – Do you see, what a monster!

större – bigger

Ok, so I only gave some phrases to the first part of the video as it is 9 minutes long. But what fun!

Why not practice your Swedish and tell me what you hear them say in the comments below!

No snow but still a white winter

This post was written in November 2011. So far there has been no recorded snowfall in Sweden. For Norrland, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t white! Over the weekend the temperature dropped below 0C multiple times. And with the mist in the air, what did we get? Frost, everywhere! It was one of the most … Read more

Darker Days in Sweden

So last year I was a wimp, and ran away for all of November and February, the “worse” months in Norrland, at least according to a few Swedes that live here. Last year we had lasting snow from October 15th. This year? No snowfall yet! Which I have to say, makes the fall a little … Read more

Traveling through Sweden

Åhhhh, it is so good to be back in Sweden! And Norrland! No more summer nights. Coffee and bullar. People sucking in air to say yes. Can you ask for more? On my way back, I decided to take my time and drive through the country a bit. Since the ferry landed in Trelleborg, my … Read more

Swedish Farm and Clock Museum

After 5 hours of driving south, I’m still in Norrland. Geez, I life far up north! Thanks to CouchSurfing.org , I was able to find a place to sleep in a small town not to far from Sollefteå (not to be confused with where I live, Skellefteå) called Skadom. I was pleasantly surprised to find … Read more

Wildlife in Norrland: Reindeer

Really, how can I complain when on a Sunday morning this is what I get to wake up to? I was fascinated! What beautiful creatures! My Swede, on the other hand, couldn’t be bothered to even to get out of bed to look. He said “Now, if they were moose, that would be a different … Read more

Moose Hunting 2010

Today was the first day of the moose hunting season in Sweden! So of course, we got up at 3:45 am to go moose hunting. Now, I was warned that this would be extremely boring. It consists of hours upon hours of sitting around waiting for a moose. But it is the experience that counts, … Read more
