Allt för Sverige – Americans in Sweden Reality Show

Imagine ten Americans of varying ages and professions, such as sheriff, factory worker, pastor, designer, student, singer-songwriter,… all of these getting together, all strangers to each other but with one common characteristic: Swedish ancestry, of which they know very little.

Buy them a return flight to Sweden and offer them a months all-inclusive journey through Sweden, while revealing, for each one, who their ancestors were and showing where they lived. Make them compete in various friendly games to eliminate one by one, until the winner finally is invited to a party to meet his previously unknown Swedish relatives.

This reality show aired on Swedish TV last fall and became an immediate success. The Swedish audience fell in love with the Americans’ open and positive attitude, and viewers laughed and cried with them.

The name of the show is Allt för Sverige! (“Everything for Sweden!”) The second season is coming this fall, with ten new Americans, in a weekly show starting on October 28. Each TV show will also be published on the Internet, the day after it was aired. The program is narrated in Swedish, but the communication with, and between, the participants is of course in English. If you know a little Swedish, you should be able to follow the show on the website belonging to Sveriges Television, on http://www.svtplay.se/. Look for the program name Allt för Sverige!

Note from Missfoster: If you are in the US, you won’t be able to access SVT play. However, there is a way around it! It’s called a proxy, and it basically tells websites you are on that you are in Sweden, not in the US or Canada. I use HideMyAss (excuse the language!) for my business all the time to see how other countries view my websites. You download the software, pay for a subscriptions (from $12 to $7 a month depending on how many months you get) and then pick “Sweden” as your country and you will be able to watch the show. If you need any help with it, let me know! Its a pity we can’t get shows like this here!

Not exactly true – a lot of svtplay content is available from the US – it depends on the show and how it’s licensed (originally american items are not available, for example). Since AFS is a svt original show it should be available unless it has copyrighted american music segments or something.

That is true! I’ve watched a lot of content on there. However Thomas heard that this particular show wasn’t available in the US. We will have to test it when it comes out 🙂

I wish you were right, but “available only within Sweden” is stated explicitly for this show, on the site svtplay.se. I don’t know the reason; the production is entirely Swedish as well as the original concept. It’s a pity: the Americans, all very different, come out as very nice and agreeable persons, and the show presents quite a few beautiful or interesting places in Sweden, as well as some “typical” Swedish dishes, habits, and games (with tongue-in-cheek).

Actually, it’s a Norwegian format, licenced/used by permission by the production company. It’s not available on svtplay abroad for commercial/advertising reasons, as usual or whatever. Don’t know the correct terminology and so forth but svt allowingly solves it temporarily somehow for vip viewers as the participants and such. But if you know how to hide/disguise your IP address, no problem…

For all people that are interested to be a part of it go to http://www.greatswedishadventure.com/ abd read as it’s the OFFICIAL casting website for the show. The casting for 2013 is already done and season 3 is airing currently in Sweden. So keep an eye on the website in december and january as i most likely will be updated if they are doing a 4th season.

Thomas is a retired IT professional, who lives alone with his golden retriever Ziggy Stardust in a small townhouse in a small town in the southern half of Sweden. He has two grown-up kids and at least five grandkids – "as far as I know".

Thomas enjoys daily long walks with Ziggy in the forests around town, he loves cooking for his guests, and he likes to make things with his hands. He says he loves good food, good wine, people who smile and make him smile.

Having spent most of his life developing things, methods and organizations, he's passionately interested in all kinds of technology, natural science, politics,... anything that raises a problem, whether it can be solved or not. Consequently, he is consistently short of time.

While he was professionally active, he lived in San Francisco a few years, working as software engineer down in Silicon Valley. He claims that he did leave his heart in San Francisco, and is constantly planning to go back and pick it up. Quoting Hoagy Carmichael's Hong Kong Blues, he says "... every time I try to leave, sweet opium won't let me fly away... ...i.e. my opium is Sweden, my kids, my dog, my friends, my forest,... you know, I'm Swedish."
