Driving in Norrland

Most people know that in the United States, teenagers are very lucky that they can get their license and legally drive at 16. In most European countries, the driving age is 18, and with how expensive the test is, not everyone bothers to even get a driver’s license until they really need it.

Sweden is no different. To be able to legally drive a regular car, you have to wait until you are at least 18. For some motorcycle engine’s you have to wait until you are 21!

But there is a loop hole in Sweden, and in Norrland, where there are few people and lots of farms, people take advantage of it! See, because farmers wanted their sons to be able to help out around the farm, it is possible for a 16 year old to get their license to drive a tractor at 16. It makes sense. But what defines a tractor?

Apparently a tractor is any vehicle that can only reach a maximum speed of 30 km/h and are not allowed on highways. So teenagers get a car, limits the engine, and voila! They have a cool set of wheels.

Luckily this law includes that the vehicle must have a triangle displayed on the end to warn everyone else that not only can this car not go very fast, but most likely there is someone below the age of 18 driving it!

We see these “tractors” surprisingly often up where we live. I don’t think they are as common as in Stockholm, but maybe I’m wrong?

  1. They are not very common in cities (where mopeds or public transport is preferred), but they are not limited to Norrland.

People driving these vehicles are often seen as provincial by city dwellers.
